DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

New Year’s Eve. En route for the barber’s shop, a man and his young son. In the toy shop window, they see a toy train, exactly as the one of which the father dreamt during his entire childhood and never had. After the haircut, in the way home, the son chooses a different toy. To whose desire will the father respond, his son’s or his own? Will he belatedly fulfil his childhood desire causing his son to experience the repetition of his own trauma, or will he choose to accept the frustration of his own desire in order to fulfil his son’s desire?

The Gift is the only film I did for television. It was meant to be included in the children’s programmes of the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation – ERT. It was screened on New Year’s Eve of 1982; and the screening was cut before the end of the film for the celebrations at the changing of the year. It is now lost.
